A beautiful Niho (tooth) design pendant made of New Zealand Kawakawa pounam, handcrafted by Moreton carvers based in Hokitika, South Island.
The tooth symbolises strength and resilience, commonly associated with the whale and the shark.
Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
Kawakawa Pounamu ranges from a rich green to a dark, almost black, shade of green. Kawakawa Pounamu is named after the native kawakawa plant, known to have healing properties, and used both medicinally and in cooking.
